The Fear of Poverty: Understanding and Overcoming It for a Prosperous Life

Napoleon Hill, in his timeless classic Think and Grow Rich, describes the fear of poverty as one of the most debilitating psychological barriers to success. It is not just the absence of wealth but a paralyzing mental condition that prevents individuals from pursuing their goals, taking risks, and living a fulfilling life. In today's fast-paced and often uncertain economic climate, this fear remains a significant obstacle for many. Let’s explore the concept in depth, understand its root causes, and discuss practical strategies to overcome it.

What Is the Fear of Poverty?

The fear of poverty is the deep-seated anxiety about losing financial security or not having enough to meet basic needs. Hill identifies it as one of the "Six Ghosts of Fear," a mental state that stifles ambition, undermines self-confidence, and encourages procrastination. This fear often manifests as:

  • Indecisiveness: Inability to make bold decisions due to the fear of financial loss.
  • Lack of ambition: Settling for less to avoid perceived risks.
  • Procrastination: Delaying actions that could lead to financial growth.
  • Dependency: Relying on others for security rather than building self-sufficiency.

  • Mobile applications facilitating delivery services are gaining traction, allowing small businesses to reach a broader customer base efficiently(Wickramarathne et al., 2022).

Coconut Prices Skyrocket: A Crisis for Sri Lankans with No Immediate Relief in Sight

Coconut, an essential ingredient in Sri Lankan kitchens, has become a luxury many cannot afford. From Pettah's bustling markets to Dambulla's quieter streets, prices have surged to unprecedented levels. On December 8, 2024, a visit to the local market revealed a half-coconut costing as much as 90 rupees. This sharp price increase is only the latest chapter in a troubling story that has seen the cost of coconuts rise by 63% over the past year. Retail prices that averaged Rs. 120 per coconut in December 2023 have now reached as high as Rs. 195, making it a staple out of reach for many households.

The Rising Coconut Crisis: Causes and Consequences

This dramatic price hike is not just a passing fluctuation; it results from a complex set of factors built up over several years. Experts point to a combination of poor policy decisions, adverse weather conditions, and global supply chain issues that have contributed to the crisis. One of the most significant factors is the long-term effects of the fertiliser ban imposed by the government in 2021. While intended to reduce the country's dependency on imported chemicals, the ban has devastated agriculture, particularly coconut cultivation.

Empowering Public Service Workers in Sri Lanka: A Comprehensive Training for the Divisional Secretariat Field Staff

On December 4, 2024, I had the honour of conducting a transformative 3.5-hour training program for the field staff of the Divisional Secretariat, held at the DS Conference Hall. The training aimed to address the critical inefficiencies within Sri Lanka’s public sector and provide practical strategies to enhance public service delivery quality. The program, which saw the participation of 50 active members from the field staff, was designed to provide tools, insights, and hands-on experiences to help them improve communication, collaboration, and overall efficiency in service delivery.

With over 20 years of local and international experience in public sector work, I have had the opportunity to observe and engage with public service systems in diverse environments, from Sri Lanka to global best practices in countries like Singapore and South Korea. This experience has shaped my approach to public sector training, focusing on addressing systemic issues and individual skill development. This training aimed to empower the staff with the necessary knowledge and mindset to overcome challenges and foster a culture of service excellence.

Postponing the A/L Examination in Sri Lanka: A Call for Understanding and Support

“We’ve lost everything—our homes, livelihoods, and peace of mind. How can we possibly focus on exams when every day is a struggle just to survive?” A student from Batticaloa, Sri Lanka.

As Sri Lanka grapples with a series of unprecedented crises—from devastating floods to a severe economic downturn—students preparing for the 2024 GCE Advanced Level (A/L) examinations are facing enormous challenges. The recent decision by the Examinations Department to postpone the exams until December 3, 2024, is a step in the right direction. However, the need for further postponement is becoming more pressing by the day.

These students, who have already weathered the disruptive effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, are now contending with natural disasters, economic hardship, and political instability. To allow them the best chance to succeed in their exams, we must consider extending the examination dates until January or February 2025. This will not only give students more time to recover but will ensure that they are mentally and emotionally prepared to face this critical academic milestone.

The Power of a Burning Desire: Setting Your Vision for 2025

The world is advancing rapidly, and for youth entering 2025, having a clear vision is no longer optional—it’s essential. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill emphasizes the transformative power of a burning desire, and this principle remains more relevant than ever. This blog will explore how to identify and solidify deeply resonant goals, provide actionable steps to transform vague dreams into measurable objectives, and offer examples of aspirations in education, career, and personal growth tailored to the youth of 2025.

Why Burning Desire is Essential

A burning desire propels individuals toward success. It’s more than wishful thinking; it’s a deeply rooted commitment to achieving specific goals, regardless of obstacles. According to a 2023 global survey by Deloitte, 70% of Gen Z individuals prioritize finding purpose-driven careers and personal fulfillment over mere financial success. This demonstrates that youth today are not just looking for a job or degree but seeking a meaningful direction.
