Kilinochchi, in the northern reaches of Sri Lanka, is a place where the soil remembers. For decades, it bore witness to war — to the sound of shells instead of laughter, to empty homes instead of bustling courtyards, to silence heavy with loss. When the conflict finally ended, the land was quiet, but it was not at peace. Families returned to broken homes, missing loved ones, and futures that seemed uncertain.

From War Zones to Boardrooms: What the Marginalized Taught Me About Leadership

Soon after the war ended, I was appointed to the Northern Province as an Assistant Director in the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skill Development. At that time, the wounds of conflict were still fresh, and the path to recovery had barely begun.

As the only Tamil officer in my role at the Ministry, this assignment was more than a professional responsibility—it was personal.

One of our Ministry's core mandates was to uplift disadvantaged communities, and that became our mission in Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu, two of the country's most affected districts.

Their World, Our Waste: A Stark Reminder from a Journey That Will Stay With You.

A few years ago, driven by a familiar purpose, I embarked on a journey to empower and support the resilient community of Thonithaddamudu village. Nestled deep within the forest of Batticaloa District, approximately 100 kilometers from Batticaloa Town and about 125 kilometers from my starting point near Kaluwanchikudy, Thettatativu South, lies this isolated haven.

The journey itself was a testament to their remoteness. My friend and I navigated broken roads and expansive grasslands on a motorbike, the sun beating down on landscapes that mirrored the parched lives we were heading towards. The faces we encountered along the way, weathered by hardship yet holding a spark of hope, etched themselves into my memory.

Honored to Celebrate Community Service with the Sethupathy Award!

On the auspicious occasion of New Year’s Day, 14th April 2025, we had the privilege of organising and coordinating a truly meaningful event at Kompuchchanthi Pillayar, Thettativu, to recognise and honour selfless individuals who dedicate their time and energy to the upliftment of our local community.

The Sethupathy Award, one of the most prestigious awards rooted in India’s rich history since the Nayakar Regime, was presented to those who have made outstanding contributions in education, cultural development, agriculture, and preserving regional norms and traditions — all in collaboration with local bodies.

This event was graced by academia, village leaders, and many inspiring personalities, with the generous support of Hon. P. Kamalanathan, President of Sri Balamurugan Temple, Thettativu.

It was a moment of immense pride for me to have had the opportunity to coordinate and organise this ceremony to appreciate the dedicated service of others working tirelessly for society's betterment.

Empowering Public Service Workers in Sri Lanka: A Comprehensive Training for the Divisional Secretariat Field Staff

On December 4, 2024, I had the honour of conducting a transformative 3.5-hour training program for the field staff of the Divisional Secretariat, held at the DS Conference Hall. The training aimed to address the critical inefficiencies within Sri Lanka’s public sector and provide practical strategies to enhance public service delivery quality. The program, which saw the participation of 50 active members from the field staff, was designed to provide tools, insights, and hands-on experiences to help them improve communication, collaboration, and overall efficiency in service delivery.

With over 20 years of local and international experience in public sector work, I have had the opportunity to observe and engage with public service systems in diverse environments, from Sri Lanka to global best practices in countries like Singapore and South Korea. This experience has shaped my approach to public sector training, focusing on addressing systemic issues and individual skill development. This training aimed to empower the staff with the necessary knowledge and mindset to overcome challenges and foster a culture of service excellence.

The incident, which claimed the lives of several young students and left others missing, underscores the urgent need for comprehensive flood disaster preparedness and community awareness. This case study highlights the key takeaways from the tragedy, proposes actionable measures, and emphasizes the role of each stakeholder in mitigating future disasters.

The Incident: A Tragic Loss of Life

Heavy rains triggered flash floods in the Mavadipalli area on a fateful day. A group of individuals, including six students and two adults, was swept away while navigating the floodwaters using an agricultural machine. Rescue teams have since recovered several bodies, but the emotional scars left on the community are deep. This heartbreaking incident could have been mitigated with better preparedness and awareness.

In a heartfelt tribute to Philomena Aunt, today marks the 31st day since her passing. To commemorate her memory, the community took its first step by reaching out to the elders residing at Nandavanam Elder Home in Kaluwanchikkudy, showering them with small yet meaningful gifts.

Philomena Aunt's legacy extends far and wide, representing a profound example of feminine strength in the heart of Eelam. Her multifaceted identity as a remarkable housewife, writer, and thinker resonates within local communities and reverberates in international forums. On this Mother's Day, we take pride in remembering her alongside other influential women on the global stage.

Rooted Resilience: Cultivating a Cool Future Through Youth-Driven Tree Planting

In an era where the environment demands our attention, a silent hero is working tirelessly, asking for nothing in return—a tree. Did you know that a single tree emits 260 pounds of oxygen annually, sustaining two human lives? The ecological benefits are staggering, with a tree's fifty-year lifespan contributing $30,000 in oxygen production, $35,000 in water purification, and an astounding $125,000 in carbon sequestration. Governments invest billions to achieve what trees achieve effortlessly.

This brings us to a crucial realization—we must champion tree planting. The solution lies in recognizing the worth of trees and actively participating in their proliferation. An initiative sparked by the young minds of our community can be the key to unlocking a cool and sustainable future.

In April 2021, the youth of Batticaloa took a significant step towards this vision. Underlining the importance of tree planting, they heeded the call to action. Their hands, young and eager, became the agents of positive change, sowing the seeds of a greener tomorrow.

Empowering Communities: Seelan's Initiative to Tackle Poverty through Child Nutrition Programs

The persistent challenges faced by many parts of Batticaloa, marked by economic decline, underscore the urgent need for comprehensive solutions. Poverty and unemployment continue to afflict our people, demanding more than just temporary relief — a concerted effort to uplift them from these challenging circumstances. In collaboration with the community, Seelan has taken a proactive step by initiating a nutrition program to provide sustainable support to needy school children.

The impact of this initiative became tangible as a quantity of Nestamold Palma was distributed under the ongoing nutrition program. The beneficiaries included the Kannapuram Narayanan Preschool children, Kilakkin Oli Preschool, Malayarkatu, and Palamurugan Preschool Thikodai. By addressing the nutritional needs of these young minds, Seelan strives to break the cycle of poverty and open doors to a brighter future.

Hindus across Sri Lanka celebrated Thai Pongal, a Hindu harvest festival dedicated to the Sun God. The festival is a public holiday in Sri Lanka. The Hindus, among them,
are celebrating the “Pongal” harvest festival, popularly known as Thai Pongal, celebrated in the first four days of the Thai month in the Tamil-Hindu calendar.

Tamil culture has been forgotten for various reasons for many years, but now citizens are responsible for restoring them and giving back to society. This Pongal festival was concluded with a noble purpose. Notably, many of the village organisations have worked closely to conduct this event successfully.

Shielding Our Community: Eastern University Alumni Association's Crusade Against Dengue

In the face of a mounting dengue epidemic, Sri Lanka stands at the forefront of a significant health crisis. With a staggering 73,601 suspected cases reported in November 2019 alone, the threat has reached unprecedented levels, particularly in regions like Batticaloa within the Eastern Province. As the monsoon rains exacerbate the situation, the Eastern University Alumni Association has risen, taking a proactive stance to combat this menacing health crisis.

Initiated on November 22, 2019, the Eastern University alumni association embarked on targeted campaigns in the worst-affected areas of the Batticaloa district. Their primary goal is to ignite awareness and galvanize the community in the fight against dengue.

Fulfilling Dreams: S.T. Seelan's Vision Transforms Lives through Nutrition and Education

In a heartening initiative aimed at uplifting the underprivileged, a comprehensive work program focusing on providing essential nutrition to preschool children has been set in motion in Batticaloa District. This remarkable effort was exemplified through a mobile medical camp and feeding event on Sunday, April 7, 2019, targeting the underprivileged preschool students of Batticaloa Parathivu Pattu Divisional Secretariat Division.

The event, orchestrated under the dynamic leadership of social activist S.T. Seelan, was a collaborative effort by the East Sri Lanka Hindu Community Development Council, the Nick and Nellie Foundation Fund, and the Porativu Pattu Divisional Secretariat.

Empowering Minds: SLAAAA's Support Transforms Thirukonamadu Muslim School Reading Room

In a significant gesture of support, the Sri Lankan and Australian Awarded Alumni Association Association (SLAAAA) has made a noteworthy impact on Thirukonamadu Muslim School in the Polonnaruwa district. The association has generously contributed several books and furniture to enhance the college's reading room, responding to the specific needs of the students studying at this institution.

The event, which took place amidst customs and traditions, saw the active participation of high-ranking members of the organization, including its president and secretary. On the 4th of November 2018, they officially handed over the newly equipped reading hall to the principal, teachers, and students.

This initiative goes beyond the immediate contribution of books and furniture; it signifies a commitment to education and community development. SLAAAA members believed such programs should extend beyond Thirukonamadu Muslim Computer College to all needy places. The books provided are not mere study materials but tools to mould students into responsible citizens. The organization emphasizes that the cycle of poverty, unemployment, and criminal activities can be broken through education.

Celebrating Excellence: Vivekananda College of Technology Honors Graduates with Certificate Event

On a momentous occasion, Vivekananda College of Technology in Batticaloa District hosted a certificate presentation ceremony on the 9th of October 2017 in the college auditorium. The event was dedicated to acknowledging and celebrating the achievements of students who successfully completed the technical course specializing in CCRIV camera installation.

The certificate presentation ceremony was presided over by the esteemed Principal of the college, K. Prathees. The event brought together lecturers, students, and distinguished guests, including Eastern University lecturer S. Sasitharan and Assistant Director S.T.Seelan.
