Fisheries, a staple food source, have been devastated as lower water levels and higher temperatures result in massive fish die-offs.

Every child, upon turning five, is entitled to enroll in a government school, ensuring universal access to education.

Postponing the A/L Examination in Sri Lanka: A Call for Understanding and Support

 

“We’ve lost everything—our homes, livelihoods, and peace of mind. How can we possibly focus on exams when every day is a struggle just to survive?” A student from Batticaloa, Sri Lanka.

As Sri Lanka grapples with a series of unprecedented crises—from devastating floods to a severe economic downturn—students preparing for the 2024 GCE Advanced Level (A/L) examinations are facing enormous challenges. The recent decision by the Examinations Department to postpone the exams until December 3, 2024, is a step in the right direction. However, the need for further postponement is becoming more pressing by the day.

These students, who have already weathered the disruptive effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, are now contending with natural disasters, economic hardship, and political instability. To allow them the best chance to succeed in their exams, we must consider extending the examination dates until January or February 2025. This will not only give students more time to recover but will ensure that they are mentally and emotionally prepared to face this critical academic milestone.

It comprises three interconnected components: genetic diversity, species diversity, and ecosystem diversity, which are essential to the stability and functioning of our natural world.

However, the current state of the world's biodiversity presents a grave crisis. Scientists have identified its profound impact on both the inhabitants of our planet and the entire plant and animal communities. The urgency of this situation is reflected in the warning that we are rapidly approaching the 6th mass extinction event, with the possibility of life on Earth being wiped out for the sixth time. The consequences are far-reaching, with global food production and food security being at stake. Failure to address biodiversity conservation during these challenging times of economic and food crises will undoubtedly result in severe repercussions for the world. Biodiversity itself stands as the determining factor for global food supply and food diversity. Floods and waterlogging lead to the proliferation of disease-carrying mosquitoes and rats, and this often results in outbreaks of dengue, malaria, and rat fever. According to the epidemiology unit of the Ministry of Health, the number of cases of rat fever reported in Sri Lanka by the end of last April was 2642, with 19 deaths reported in Galle alone.
