"Please, youth should engage in farming," emphasized by me several times recognizing the critical role of young individuals in addressing Sri Lanka's ongoing economic crisis and its impact on food security. The country's predicament has steadily worsened, burdening the poor and vulnerable segments of society. The adverse effects of debt problems have permeated every aspect of the economy, resulting in dire consequences.

Sri Lanka finds itself amid a food crisis, exacerbated by global disruptions such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis, and geopolitical events like Russia's invasion of Ukraine earlier this year. While these factors have affected food supplies worldwide, Sri Lanka's specific food insecurity primarily stems from the prevailing economic crisis and short-sighted policies enforced by local policymakers.

On the occasion of Prof. Mounaguru's 80th birthday, we celebrate the remarkable life and achievements of a true luminary in the world of traditional art and literature. Born on June 9, 1943, in Seelamunai, Batticaloa, near Amirthakali, Prof. Mounaguru has dedicated his life to the preservation, modernization, and promotion of traditional Tamil arts. From his early education to his illustrious career as an educator, playwright, and actor, Prof. Mounaguru has left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of Sri Lanka. Early Life and Education

Prof. Mounaguru was born to Chinnaya and Muthammal as their second son. His formative years were spent in Seelamunai, where he attended the Amirthakali Methodist Mission School until the fifth grade. He then continued his education at Vantharumoolai Central College, where he not only excelled academically but also showcased his leadership abilities by holding positions in various organizations such as the Tamil Mandram and the Hindu Mandram. Additionally, his passion for sports led him to actively participate in volleyball and football teams.

The Vital Role of Food Safety in Sri Lanka's Welfare and Economic Progress

Food safety is a paramount concern that extends beyond individual well-being, impacting a nation's overall welfare and economic progress. Sri Lanka, with its rich history in the public health sector, has made commendable strides in ensuring food safety. However, outdated regulations, inadequate coordination, and monitoring practices have left the country's food safety landscape in dire need of reform. Recognizing the urgency to bridge these gaps, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have joined forces in the BESPA-FOOD project, funded by the European Union (EU). This collaborative initiative aims to strengthen Sri Lanka's food safety and quality control system, benefiting both the food industry and the health and safety of Sri Lankans.

Transforming State-Owned Enterprises in Sri Lanka: Enhancing Efficiency and Performance Optimization through Public-Private Ownership

Introduction

State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) in Sri Lanka are undergoing significant reforms to improve their efficiency and performance. In particular, public enterprises engaged in commercial activities are being optimized through public-private ownership. Former Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake revealed that these reforms aim to generate revenues for the state, reduce administrative burden, and distribute ownership and management to the private sector. This article explores the current state of SOEs in Sri Lanka, the need for reform, and the potential benefits of public-private ownership.

Current State of SOEs

Sri Lanka has a total of 527 SOEs, with 52 of them identified as strategically important. Out of these, 39 are currently making profits, while 13 are still facing losses. The losses incurred by these 13 institutions amount to Rs. 1,029 billion, while the profits made by the remaining 39 enterprises reach Rs. 218 billion. These figures highlight the urgent need for performance optimization and financial restructuring within SOEs.

His journey from Thanushkody to the Gulf of Mannar is a testament to his exceptional abilities and serves as an inspiration to all aspiring athletes.

Mathushigan's journey to conquer the Palk Strait was preceded by a prelude of tremendous dedication and hard work. Having swum 20km at Galissas Beach, he showcased his prowess and readiness for the monumental feat that awaited him. Starting his swimming training at the tender age of twelve at Batticaloa's Weber Stadium, Mathushigan's talent flourished, leading to numerous victories in provincial and open level swimming competitions. With a total of twelve medals to his name, his journey towards conquering the Palk Strait was a culmination of years of relentless pursuit of excellence.

 The modern era has witnessed an alarming surge in calamities befalling innocent children, both boys and girls, leading to devastating consequences such as loss of lives. Acts of crime, accidents, sexual abuse, abductions, seductions, and even murders have become distressingly common occurrences. This disturbing trend demands immediate attention from law enforcement authorities. 

Evolving Social Landscape and Its Impact on Child Welfare

The Changing Social Fabric:

Over the past few decades, the country has undergone significant transformations in various spheres of society, including culture, education, economy, technology, and social events. These advancements have greatly influenced people's lifestyles, gradually eroding long-standing practices such as social obligations, spiritual values, religious concepts, and traditional social interactions. A growing emphasis on competition has taken precedence over the nurturing of human values.

Parental Efforts Amidst Challenges:

Despite these challenges, parents strive to provide their children with the best possible education. Educators emphasize that a lack of education severely hampers a child's future prospects. However, the modern world's fast pace often leaves children bereft of the cherished love, affection, and care of their parents. Consequently, children fail to internalize essential qualities of human nature such as love, joy, respect, patience, and compassion.

Celebrating the Richness of Life

World Biodiversity Day, observed on May 22 every year, serves as a global platform to raise awareness about the significance of conserving biodiversity and its invaluable contribution to the survival of our planet. Biodiversity encompasses the intricate web of interactions among organisms, ranging from microorganisms and plants to animals, within diverse ecosystems. It comprises three interconnected components: genetic diversity, species diversity, and ecosystem diversity, which are essential to the stability and functioning of our natural world.

However, the current state of the world's biodiversity presents a grave crisis. Scientists have identified its profound impact on both the inhabitants of our planet and the entire plant and animal communities. The urgency of this situation is reflected in the warning that we are rapidly approaching the 6th mass extinction event, with the possibility of life on Earth being wiped out for the sixth time. The consequences are far-reaching, with global food production and food security being at stake. Failure to address biodiversity conservation during these challenging times of economic and food crises will undoubtedly result in severe repercussions for the world. Biodiversity itself stands as the determining factor for global food supply and food diversity. Thus, it becomes crucial for Sri Lankans to join the global community in celebrating World Biodiversity Day.
