Workshop conducted on “Increase the relevancy of the available training courses” with collaboration of Tertiary Vocational Education Commission (TVEC)” on 30th August 2017 at BMICH.

Prof.Rajiva Wijesinghe, Chairman, TVEC who delivered a keynote speak and he mainly highlighted to improve the quality/ relevance of training programmes by, for example, registration, of all vocational training institutions; accreditation and auditing of coerces and programmes; and reinforcing labour market relevance through collaboration with employer..

The non-governmental organizations, professional bodies and representatives from the industries participated actively and expressed their thoughts throughout the workshop.

Study on acceleration of dengue cases in Batticaloa

The Ministry of Health has pointed out that the number of dengue cases identified so far this year is doubled from the total number of dengue cases throughout last year. Sri Lanka is facing an unprecedented outbreak of dengue fever, which has resulted in more than 100,000 cases and claimed almost 300 lives so far this year. Aid groups say that the onslaught of cases is overwhelming the island nation’s medical system.

105,153 dengue fever cases have been reported across Sri Lanka up to 24 July, according to numbers from the Epidemiology Unit of the country’s Ministry of Health. That is almost double the total case count in the entire year of 2016, which stands at 55,150. A total of 296 people have died from the mosquito-borne epidemic so far. The above statements have stated in the report regarding the acceleration of dengue menace by the Ministry of Health.

As per the tourism industries forecast for infrastructure and manpower by 2018 nearly 200 properties extended to around 12000 rooms will be ready for operation. By 2020 Sri Lanka project a tourism arrival of 4 million anticipating a direct employment increase of 48,000 for housekeeping staff. This is based on the prevailing ratio of four HK staffs per room (4; 1). This paper recommends a possible workable solution to fill the requirement of HK staffs from the housemaid returnees.

Requirements for New Education Transformation and skilled development.

Higher education and Tertiary Education sectors are one of the most powerful sectors of education in Sri Lanka and it will inspire the country’s value, ethics and social institutions so that Sri Lanka becomes celebrated as an enlightened and peaceful multi-ethic, multi-religious and multi-cultural society. Particularly, the examination-orientated teaching in Sri Lanka’s education system needs to change urgently. Examination standards are often out of context. An appropriate grading and reporting system must be accepted without delay, as the current methods do not replicate a meaningful feedback to students. The mental and psychological pressures exerted on children due to the present system must be carefully studied and remedied as a matter of priority. Dependence on extra tuition involving extra spending for parents and study time for students must be reduced or done away with. This article has focused the achievement, challenges of education system in Sri Lanka and the strategies which have developed to overcome the existing challenges in future.

Sri Lanka overseas employment, its economic contribution, and composition

Recent trends in Sri Lanka indicate uneven progress in the labour market. Millions of youth remain unemployed, and even more are working but earning too little to help their families escape poverty. Moreover, in spite of some improvements in job quality, more than half of all workers in the region still do not earn a wage or salary and are often trapped in unproductive and informal work arrangements.

Starting on 26 December 2010, Batticaloa was struck by the heaviest rains in almost one hundred years, causing devastating northeast monsoon floods in 14 Divisional Secretariat Areas. The flood damage is incurred to homes, infrastructure, schools, water supply, and sanitation systems, among other. The most recent floods are preceded by intense rainfall which had already put many of the conflict-affected returnees at risk.

At the district level, UNDP has been playing an increasingly important role in Early Recovery/Recovery coordination and programming. Early Recovery (ER) is understood as a multidimensional recovery process that begins in the humanitarian setting, and encompasses the restoration of basic services, livelihoods, shelter, governance, security and the rule of law, environment and social dimensions including the reintegration of displaced populations.
