Background

The district of Batticaloa occupies the Central Part of the Eastern Province. Major portion of the population is engaged in Agriculture while the fishing occupies the second place in the social structure. Other occupations are Industrial activities, Business and Employment in Government, Corporation and private establishments. There are about 20 % of population are live under poverty line in this district which is highest in Sri Lanka. Post war areas of Batticaloa are extremely poor due to disadvantaged social and economic circumstances. Disadvantaged families are those in financial strain, those with less parenting support (I.e. single parent), families with a lower level of education, Lower Health Care, Lower parenting skills, individuals with mental illness, those that lack social support or formal or informal community networks.

Maximize Economic Benefit of Foreign Employment. Introduction.

International migration is a major driver of social and economic change in our country. Foreign Employment provided a remittance income having significant economic and social consequences. Every year over 250,000 Sri Lankans leave the country for foreign employment. This outflow of migrants has increased steadily over time, increased 20 times from 1986 to 2012. The numbers have dropped however by 12.5 per cent in 2015. But, little is known about those who return to the country after working abroad, although returnees can be greater benefit to the economy than migrants. Returnee migrants bring back new skills, knowledge and capital which can provide more value addition and create new employment opportunities among others, if properly directed and integrated into the economy and the society of the home country.

Sharing Insights on Women in the Workforce!

Recently, I had the privilege of participating as a special speaker at a National Dialogue organized by WUSC, where I delved into the barriers, opportunities, and recommendations for women in the workforce and Female Labour Force Participation (FLFP) in Sri Lanka. It was an honor to contribute to such an important conversation and to share insights that can drive positive change for women across the nation.

Reflecting on the discussions, I couldn't help but feel proud of the strides that women have made in Sri Lanka's workforce. Did you know that women represent 52% of the population and account for 56% of the registered voters in Sri Lanka? This showcases the significant role that women play in shaping our society and economy.

Celebrating Excellence: Vivekananda College of Technology Honors Graduates with Certificate Event

On a momentous occasion, Vivekananda College of Technology in Batticaloa District hosted a certificate presentation ceremony on the 9th of October 2017 in the college auditorium. The event was dedicated to acknowledging and celebrating the achievements of students who successfully completed the technical course specializing in CCRIV camera installation.

The certificate presentation ceremony was presided over by the esteemed Principal of the college, K. Prathees. The event brought together lecturers, students, and distinguished guests, including Eastern University lecturer S. Sasitharan and Assistant Director S.T.Seelan.

I could have learned something about future requirements of industries from intellectuals' speech in this event. There will be massive job famine in near future for those who receive only general education. We do not have the mood to accept it from the past lesson. Minister said change is unchanged. We need to understand the minister's prediction, if we understand the situation which will support to increase the talent supply of future youth.

Workshop conducted on “Increase the relevancy of the available training courses” with collaboration of Tertiary Vocational Education Commission (TVEC)” on 30th August 2017 at BMICH.

Prof.Rajiva Wijesinghe, Chairman, TVEC who delivered a keynote speak and he mainly highlighted to improve the quality/ relevance of training programmes by, for example, registration, of all vocational training institutions; accreditation and auditing of coerces and programmes; and reinforcing labour market relevance through collaboration with employer..

The non-governmental organizations, professional bodies and representatives from the industries participated actively and expressed their thoughts throughout the workshop.

Study on acceleration of dengue cases in Batticaloa

The Ministry of Health has pointed out that the number of dengue cases identified so far this year is doubled from the total number of dengue cases throughout last year. Sri Lanka is facing an unprecedented outbreak of dengue fever, which has resulted in more than 100,000 cases and claimed almost 300 lives so far this year. Aid groups say that the onslaught of cases is overwhelming the island nation’s medical system.

105,153 dengue fever cases have been reported across Sri Lanka up to 24 July, according to numbers from the Epidemiology Unit of the country’s Ministry of Health. That is almost double the total case count in the entire year of 2016, which stands at 55,150. A total of 296 people have died from the mosquito-borne epidemic so far. The above statements have stated in the report regarding the acceleration of dengue menace by the Ministry of Health.
